Each of my siblings and I, along with my dad received a certified letter in the mail several months ago. It was from Cari and Lonnie's hospice chaplain. It stated Lonnie's funeral arrangements had been made by Lonnie prior to him losing his ability to speak. So with nothing to do or plan, the days before the viewing were spent together with family just hangin' out. Travis and Kellie were gracious to open their house to all of us from out of town. We had two full days to share stories about Lonnie and just enjoy each others company. We had a BBQ after the viewing Thursday night and all of my siblings, spouses and my dad & Chris were able to be there. This was truly a historical event since this usually doesn't happen very often. I am hoping Kellie took pictures that night because I didn't take any. In fact, I was NOT a good photographer throughout the entire week. I am relying on my other family members to share their pictures with me. I've decided I am not a stress picture taker (hence the reason I took ZERO pictures at Torri's wedding).

We had been told by Lonnie's son-in-law Cody, that Lonnie's casket would be carried in a glass case behind a Harley Davidson motorcycle to the cemetery. This is officially called "
The last Ride." To my understanding, there is a group of military veterans that own motorcycles who call themselves
The Patriot Guard. Since Lonnie is a Veteran, they planned to ride behind the casket in a specific formation along with all of Lonnie's friends and relatives who own motorcycles. When we arrived at the church Friday morning this brought tears to my eyes when I saw the motorcycle that would be pulling the casket with my brother in it. I know Lonnie would have gotten a kick out of this. He loved riding his Harley and he was proud of his country. I have never heard of something like this but I must admit, it was very impressive.

It really was a wonderful way to send Lonnie off. Thank you for letting Bob & I and Lonnie's friends be a part of your memory party the night of Lonnie's funeral.
ReplyDeleteI am working on my blog now so there will be more pictures for you soon.
I keep telling my family to send me pictures but everyone is moving slow. I look forward to seeing yours. Thanks for coming to the party. We loved hearing Bob's stories of him and Lonnie as teenagers and young adults...good times!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is stunning. What a beautiful tribute to Lonnie.
ReplyDeleteDitto to what Jean and Melanie said. A beautiful tribute, I'm sure Lonnie and your mom were loving it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this difficult time with us.
Love you
oops, posted under Jae's profile instead of mine.
ReplyDeleteNo problem! It really was a cool thing with the motorcycles. My hubby loved renting one for the day, it was a great way to send my big brother off.
